WHAT WAS HAPPENING 100 YEARS AGO

October 14th 1906 was a Sunday and it was the 19th Sunday after Pentecost  and the maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Feasts during the week were St Teresa, St Hedwig , St Luke and St Peter of Alcantara.

Special Notices

Catechism on Sundays at 2pm. Instruction and Benediction at 2.30pm. At 6.30pm there was October Devotions, Sermon and Benediction. Baptisms and Churchings were at 3pm on Sunday and 7.30am on Friday. Rosary and Benediction was celebrated at 7.30pm on Friday. October Devotions were every morning during holy Mass!

The 14th October being the 2nd Sunday of the month was general communion for women. The following week 21st there was Exposition and a procession in the evening.

The sick included Fr O’Brien,  James Walsh, Patrick Curran, John Moore, and Patrick McGuiness. The lately dead were Fr Hughes, Isabel Crowe, Bridget McKenna, and Thomas Power. Anniversaries were for Bernard and Patrick Dorian and Edward English.

There were 2 Masses each day, Sunday to Friday and one on Saturday.

The Banns of Marriage were read for John Mahoney of Kimberley Street, and Mary C Swain of Thirlwell Terrace, Southwick.

In Wingate there was a massive explosion at Wingate Colliery which led to the deaths of 26 miners.  The youngest was just 20 and the oldest 67.  The average age of the dead was 51.  We must remember that National Insurance Pensions were not introduced until 1910.  We should remember those who died in this disaster and their families in our prayers.

On 8th October the ‘permanent wave’ was demonstrated to fellow hairdressers by Karl Ludwig Nessler.

In 1906 Upton Sinclair wrote ‘The Jungle’ about the state of the stock yards and food processing in America and the treatment of the workers.  This book about social justice led to the reform of the food inspection laws in the USA.

Frederick Hopkins an English biochemist concluded that vitamins were an essential part of the diet and that the lack of them led to scurvy and rickets.
