CAFOD—FOCUS AFRICA
During the Harvest Fast Day we learned of the help given by CAFOD to subsistence farmers like Andre Habayo, caught up in the vicious warfare in the Congo.
In Niger, a serious food crisis in July 2005 caused by drought, poor government and a plague of locusts, devasted crops. One year on, CAFOD has used £520,000 to provide food for more than 87,000 people. Ten feeding centres are treating more than 2,800 malnourished children. Millet grain is given to the most vulnerable people. The more able-bodied work to receive their food. In Kenya, two years of poor rains left 3.5 million people in need of food. In some areas 70% of cattle died. Livestock is their only security for the future. CAFOD is training them to think differently about owning large numbers of livestock. “Today we need to marry local experience with economic and drought understanding to ensure the survival of the pastoral way of life”
In Mozambique, the poor are being trained to understand the political issues so as to stand up for their rights. “We gain the courage to approach our local authorities to find out what has been done with, foe example, IMF and World Bank Money,” says Jose Carlos Mugunhe. “We are grateful to CAFOD for helping us. I can see great improvements in my life.”
In Mozambique, also, subsistence farmers are learning how to resist the threats of the World Bank - funded Wild Life Park, created for tourists, which is threatening them for fending off wild animals destroying their crops and animals CAFOD and local organisations are also watching any moves to displace the farmers.
These are a few of the vital areas of CAFOD work in the Africa. Africa is the current political focus area for international poverty concern. CAFOD, for its part, can only help through our support. Please continue to be generous . So far this year we have raised £2,931. And keep praying.
