CATHOLIC EDUCATION SERVICE

You will be aware that the government is proposing to introduce an amendment to the Education and Inspection bill in the house of Lords on Tuesday, 30th October. This proposal will, if passed will mean that all new faith schools must offer 25% of their place to pupils of other faith and none. If it is passed there will

no doubt be a future proposal that existing faith schools will have to offer that same no of places. The Church is opposed to this amendment.

The Catholic Education Service, Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Bishop Kevin have asked us to contact our MPs and make known our opposition to these changes to our schools. The name of your MP can be found at www.theyworkforyou.com entering in your post code. The 2 MPs for Sunderland are Bill Etherington and Chris Mullin but the constituency boundary straddles our parish. At the back of church there are copies of a model letter, along with bullet points and key facts about Catholic Schools for you to use when contacting your MP. These are also displayed on the notice boards. This is a very urgent matter so please contact you MP as soon as possible.

PARISH CHRISTMAS CARD

Our Parish Christmas Card is on sale in the repository this weekend. The large card is 30p each or 4 for £1 and the smaller card is 25p each or 5 for £1. They are blank inside so you can send your own personal greeting or use them at other times. There should be plenty for everyone. The money raised will go to our centenary projects.

PARISH COUNCIL

The next Parish Council Meeting is on Monday 6th November after Mass. There was no need for an election as there were not enough nominations to fill all the vacancies. So all who were nominated this year and all serving members of the council should attend this meeting. All parish groups are asked to send a representative to the meeting.
