CAFOD.........FOCUSAFRICA
''Poverty is not a misfortune: it's an injustice.'' We are talking about world poverty. CAFOD works to put this right. For example, in Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, and Ruanda, it supports AIDS clinics and networks to treat and counsel HIV victims. 63% of the world's HIV sufferers live in Sub-Saharan Africa, 15 million children are orphaned. In Sudan, 1.5 million have died and more than 2 million have fled their homes through conflict. The Regional Bishops' Conference, with CAFOD's support, after recent peace, has helped families to return home, providing seeds, tools, and household kits: '' I am living in a shelter made from plastic sheets given by BRC. I feel very happy,'' says Esther. The Congo has vast deposits of gold, as well as diamonds and copper, but more than 3.5 million people have died since 1998 as a result of conflict fuelled by mineral mining , and people living near mines die from cyanide and arsenic poisoning. CAFOD's Unearth Justice Campaign asks us to question where our gold comes from, and at the same time CAFOD works to improve the lives of the exploited.
Apart from Emergency Relief, these are among the many works of CAFOD throughout the world. We are this year supporting FOCUSAFRICA, and so our efforts go to bring some justice to that region. So far this year we have contributed £2,899, including two very generous bequests in memory of George Naisby and Jim Carvill.
Increasing our support for CAFOD would be an excellent way to fulfil the promise to LIVE SIMPLY, SO THAT OTHERS MAY SIMPLY LIVE.
