CAFOD.........FOCUSAFRICA

Sixty-one year old Mike Coote has been working as a CAFOD volunteer for the past four years.....giving talks to schools in and around South Buckinghamshire...'' The contrast between life here and life in Tigray is quite dramatic, '' he says.  The best way to describe the difference between their life and ours is the total lack of things that we take for granted.  I was very moved to meet families who used to have to take whatever water they could find from streams, which were also used by animals. ''

Mike was to see first hand how a water project had transformed the lives of 16,000 people in the community of Tigray.  The project --led by CAFOD's partner, the Relief Society of Tigray--has developed a system of gulleys, dams and irrigation to prevent rainfall from draining away and eroding the soil.  Most of the families now have a secure supply of drinking water, on tap, no more than 30 minutes from their homes.  Single mother Nigisti now has clean water and can grow crops.  With the money which she earns, she can send her son Gidley to school.  '' A little help really does go a long way,'' says Mike.  '' A few pounds can pay for a safe water supply and save people's lives by helping to prevent diseases.  The people lead simple lives.  They still need help, but help is the answer-- not handouts.  They need the expertise and start-up materials that CAFOD and its partners can provide.  Otherwise they have nothing.''

''Poverty is not a misfortune, it is an injustice.''  LIVE SIMPLY THAT OTHERS MAY SIMPLY LIVE

LIVESIMPLY SO OTHERS CAN SIMPLY LIVE
