THE CYCLE OF PRAYER  -  ORDINARY TIME (SUMMER)

During Ordinary Time (Summer) i.e. up to September, we are asked to pray for these intentions: A deeper understanding between Christians and Jews; Those who Suffer Persecution, Oppression and Denial of Human Rights; Europe; Human Life; Seafarers.

 

MASS TIMES

The Funeral Mass for Molly McQuillan will be celebrated at 10.am on Monday.  There is no evening Mass.  Friday is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul,  Mass will be celebrated at 7.00pm. There will be a Retiring Collection for Peter’s Pence.

 

RETIRING COLLECTION FOR DARFUR

You have all seen the terrible scenes from Darfur. CAFOD have launched an emergency appeal for Darfur.  This weekend there is be a retiring collection for CAFOD’S Appeal. Please give generously.

 

APF MILL HILL

During the month of July the Zealators will be calling to empty the red  mission boxes.  Thank you to everyone who has a mission box and to all our collectors.

 

FAIR TRADE STALL

Since our last stall in May we have sold Fair trade products totalling £505.31 including 2 cases of wine.  Our next stall will be on 14th and 15th July.  There will be no sale in August.

 

Centenary Celebrations.

We are having a mass of thanksgiving to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Fr. Anthony K. Daley to the priesthood and the gift of priesthood to the Church, on Friday 20th July at 7:00 p.m. This will be followed by a buffet in the Parish Centre.

Everyone is welcome to join in this celebration, but for catering purposes we need to know the number of people who will be staying after the mass for refreshments. If you would like to stay, would you please return the reply slip enclosed in last week’s newsletter and put it in the Offertory basket by Sunday 8th July.

Centenary Booklet

We are gathering information to put into a booklet to commemorate the Centenary of St. Joseph’s Church. There will be a section on Vocations from the Parish. We have the following names

Stephen Watson; Anthony Barr and Michael Martin, Ann Parker; Mary Redman; Lilian Crowe and Patricia Philliskirk. If we have missed out anyone – would you please let us know.

 

There will also be a section on the various groups and societies in the Parish. would like a brief summary of the history of each group and what they do, so that it can be included in the booklet.

Please pass on all information to Kathleen or Louis Dale, Bill Duncan, Ann Earl or Jo Ritchie by the end of July. Thank you.

 

Centenary Committee Meeting

There is a Centenary Committee meeting after 10am Mass on Monday to discuss the liturgy for the Mass on Holy Island.  All are welcome.

 

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS FOR PARISH CENTENARY

Sat 7th July Parish Pilgrimage to Holy Island

Proposed Programme:

  9.30am  Leave St. Joseph’s to arrive on the Island about 11.30am

12.30pm  Holy Mass

  3.00pm Meet at the Causeway to walk from the island to the mainland.

               We will be collected by the coach on the mainland side.

  4.30pm  Leave, to arrive at St. Joseph’s about 6.30pm.

Walking is best done in bare feet because of the muddy sands, and you are advised to bring a towel!  We will have a prayer, a hymn, and a decade of the Rosary as part of our walk.  If you are not walking get on the coach in the car park to collect the rest of us on the mainland.

 

Fri 28th September

Concert in church with the Cobweb Orchestra and Music Makers.

 

Thurs 11th – 14th October, Parish Flower Festival to finish off our year long celebrations ending on Sunday 14th October at 3pm with Centenary Mass.  Bishop Kevin will be the main celebrant.

 

MAD HATTER’S TEA PARTY

This is a West End Churches Together Celebration in Barnes Park from 3 - 4pm this Sunday 24th June. It includes a children’s fancy dress Competition.  Pray for good weather! For more information see the notice at the back of church.

 

CRICKET

India will play the rest of the world to try to retain the Dennis Cunningham Memorial Trophy on Sunday 1st July at 1.00 pm.  Everyone is welcome to Ryhope Hospital Cricket Ground—bring a picnic for a great family event.  If you want to play for India call Raju of the Indian Cultural Association (.  Rest of the World players call Bob (

 

A TASTE OF KERALA

Sunday 1st July, after Mass, the Indian Cultural Association will provide a variety of Indian food, for which you can make a donation.  All proceeds will go to the Father Daiy Sebastian’s impoverished mountain parish in India.  Take it home for lunch or bring it along to the cricket match at 1.00pm at Cherry Knowle.  Come along after Mass, enjoy the food and show your usual generosity for this worthy cause.

 

CAKE STALL If you want to donate a cake for next Sunday, bring it along to Mass or ring Ann or Monica.

 

LAY TRAINING FUND

Next weekend there will be a retiring collection for the Lay Training Fund.

 

JOURNEY IN FAITH

Our next Journey in Faith begins on Tuesday 26th June at 7.00pm in St. Cuthbert’s Chapel.  This course is aimed at parents requesting Baptism for their children and anyone else who wants to be confirmed.  All are welcome.

 

LIVESIMPLY SO OTHERS CAN SIMPLY LIVE

Livesimply is a campaign which has grown out of Make Poverty History.

In September we will be hosting a Deanery half day of Reflection on Livesimply, where we will all be asked to commit ourselves to this challenge.  Between now and then each week we will give letters from the livesimply alphabet which is to stimulate discussion and creative thinking. 

 

C— Compost all you can.   Cycle to work or school.

 

D— Dry laundry naturally— no tumble dryers.  Die ethically— have a green funeral.

African Mass

The next African Mass will be celebrated next Sunday, 1st July at 2pm at St. Joseph’s, Gateshead.  There will be refreshments afterwards.
