EASTERTIME
The 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation
as one feast day, or better as one ·Great Sunday" (Athanasius)
Fifty days are a seventh of the year so the season is one long Lord's Day, the
"Great Sunday". Fifty days are a week of weeks plus a day a symbol of eternity.
And so we keep Eastertime ·playing heaven," living as if God's reign had already
come. Christians-both newly baptised and the long baptised-are to live in the
wedding feast of heaven and earth, like a honeymoon, no fasting, no mourning,
endlessly singing our Alleluias.
